Title:
Tamanrasset Magnetic Observatory
Online_Linkage:http://www.bcmt.info
Description:
Abstract:
The Magnetic Observatory of Tamanrasset was opened in 1930 and the first series of observations were published in 1932. In the frame of the deployment of its worldwide network "Observatoire magnetique planetaire", the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP) along with the Centre de Recherche en Astronomie, Astrophysique et Geophysique (CRAAG) decided in 1992 to upgrade the Tamanrasset magnetic observatory in order to join INTERMAGNET network. A new data logger, a scalar and vector magnetometers were installed. In November 2004, the vector magnetometer was replaced by an homocentric IPGP VM391. In August 2005, the magnetometers and data logger were struck down by short circuit. The absolute pillar has remained unchanged since the 1930s. TAM observatory is run by engineers and technicians of the C.R.A.A.G. One-minute values are processed by IPGP. FAILURES: On the 15th of August, the magnetometers and the data logger were struck down by short circuit. The magnetic observatory restarted in December 2005.
Purpose:
To provide ground-based, calibrated values of the Earth's magnetic field at a specific location for scientific research and practical applications.

Entity_Type_Definition:
A scientific instrument for measuring the strength of magnetic fields.
Entity_Type_Definition_Source:

Attribute:
Attribute_Label:fluxgate magnetometer
Attribute_Definition:
A kind of magnetometer that detects second harmonic signals from a secondary coil surrounding an iron core that is driven into saturation by a primary coil using radio frequency signals. The second harmonic signal is proportional to the strength of the ambient magnetic field.

Attribute:
Attribute_Label:proton precession magnetometer
Attribute_Definition:
A kind of scalar magnetometer that measures only the strength of the total magnetic field vector and not its direction or components. A hydrogen-rich fluid is polarized using a strong electric current. When the current is turned off, the protons in the fluid precess around the ambient magnetic field at a frequency given by the gyromagnetic ratio and proportional to the strength of the surrounding magnetic field.
